How Destination Nackawic’s Giant Axe Found Its Home
In 1991, Nackawic earned a legendary title: Forestry Capital of Canada. To celebrate, the town commissioned a landmark worthy of its heritage—the World’s Largest Axe. True to New Brunswick’s community spirit, it was designed and built locally by a Woodstock company, just 25 minutes away.
But the real adventure began after its construction…
The Big Move: A Dawn Highway Mission
- Giant Dimensions: At 7 metres (23 feet) wide, the axe was too massive for regular transport.
- Clever Timing: To avoid traffic chaos, the town orchestrated a sunrise Sunday move, carefully hauling it down the highway.
- A Lasting Landmark: For over 30 years, the axe has stood tall on Destination Nackawic’s waterfront—a tribute to forestry, teamwork, and small-town ingenuity.
